Finally, an event in world trade

April 3, 2007

Recent news on international trade deals focused on deals that are not happening: conclusion of the Doha Round, finalisation of the US FTAs with a few South American countries such as Colombia, reduction or abolition of US tariffs on ethanol from Brazil, European EPAs with former colonies…..

But finally something happened: the US and South Korea just signed a Free Trade Agreement.

The FT reports today with some lag, Ben Muse has a lot of background. While there’s a lot written on EU and US trade strategies, Razeen Sally gives more background on the Asian perspective. Anyway: no clean deals to be expected….
